Santos admit European interest in Neymar and will begin Real Madrid talks after Copa Libertadores final

20.06.2011 at 21:49

Madrid are reportedly just one of the teams who have contacted Santos president Ribeiro about the 19-year-old phenomenon, but the club are confident he will want to stay put

Santos president Luis Alfaro Ribeiro has admitted that there is substantial European interest for his young gem Neymar, and that he will let the 19-year-old talk to suitors, including Spanish giants Real Madrid, after the Copa Libertadores final.

The Brazilians face Penarol in Wednesday’s second leg of the Copa final, hoping to win the tournament for the first time in nearly 50 years in Sao Paulo after a 0-0 draw in Uruguay. Neymar has been one of the stars of the competition, which has only increased interest from Europe’s top clubs for the talented striker.

The president of the famous institution affirmed that, as well as the interest from Madrid, several other clubs were following the starlet closely.

“It is not just Madrid, a lot of other clubs in Europe have been calling us. It is no surprise, it would be strange if they didn’t want him. If they pay the buy-out clause of €45 million and the player wants to go, there is nothing we could do,” Ribeiro asserted in a press conference held on Monday.

He added, however, that he was confident that Neymar would want to stay in the Vila Belmiro.

“The clubs can talk to Neymar after the Libertadores, but I am sure that, if we win the title, the reasons for Neymar to stay will be even stronger. I know that dizzying offers will arrive, but the player will earn more if he keeps developing here.”

Success for Santos in Wednesday’s final would mean a place in the Club World Cup this December, as well as guaranteed entry into next year’s Libertadores. Ribeiro outlined the huge project he had planned for his club, and was certain that Neymar would want to be a part of it.

“Next year we celebrate our centenary, we are hopeful of bringing Robinho and Diego back to the club, and of keeping Elano and Ganso, and Neymar could be the biggest star of that movie. Santos will write a page in the history of world football that will change the lives of the footballers involved,” the chief predicted.

Samuel Eto’o, Wesley Sneijder & Maicon all want to stay at Inter – Massimo Moratti

20.06.2011 at 21:48

The Inter president has dismissed rumours linking the trio with a move away from Giuseppe Meazza as they have all expressed their desire to stay

Inter president Massimo Moratti is unconcerned by rumours linking star players Samuel Eto’o, Wesley Sneijder and Maicon with a move away from the club in the summer transfer window.

Eto’o recently revealed that he is considering a move to the Premier League, while Sneijder has caught the attention of Manchester United and Maicon is being courted by Real Madrid.

However, Moratti is confident that the trio will stay put, telling La Gazzetta dello Sport: “All I can say regarding the transfer rumours about Eto’o, Sneijder and Maicon is that I have spoken to them and they have all told me that they do not want to leave the club.”

The chief added that the 2010 Champions League winners are closely monitoring the developments in the transfer market, with a view to strengthening their squad as they attempt to retain the Serie A title.

“It is clear that we are very focused on everything that is happening on the market now. Not just on players who could leave us, but also on players who could potentially join us.”

Inter have yet to complete their first signing of the summer transfer window, but are reportedly close to locking up Cesena’s Yuto Nagatomo on a permanent deal.

Claudio Borghi will allow Alexis Sanchez to leave Chile camp to complete Barcelona deal

20.06.2011 at 21:46

Chile coach Claudio Borghi will not stand in the way of a potential deal with Barcelona, and Sanchez will arrive in Spain by Wednesday to complete a deal

Chile coach Claudio Borghi revealed that he will grant Alexis Sanchez permission to leave the national side’s training camp ahead of the Copa America in order to complete a potential move to Barcelona.

The Udinese forward, according to reports from La Tercera, will leave Santiago on Monday evening and by Tuesday will be in Barcelona, as a lucrative transfer away from Italy looks ever more likely. He will miss Thursday’s clash with Paraguay, returning to the camp on Friday morning to continue Copa preparation.

The Roja trainer affirmed that letting the 22-year-old star leave in the middle of training was not ideal, but that he could not stand in the way of such a high-profile transfer.

“It’s a very complicated matter. If we don’t allow him to travel, and the sale goes through, we would be accountable for €30 million in the event of anything happening to him,” Borghi told television station Chilevision.

Borghi added that Sanchez will not be allowed to leave in the middle of the Copa America.

“If it happens in the middle of the Copa America, obviously not, but we have time and we know we cannot be responsible for that amount of money, so the ideal situation would be for him to travel and sign when the deal is confirmed,” he said.

The Chile tactician went on to say that the current situation is not easy, but that Sanchez is ready to play at any club.

“We have spoken about this possibility he has; it’s not easy, he’s 22 and his transfer costs a lot of money, but he is ready to play anywhere. He is training to be the best, he has a little bit of anxiety, but that will surely come to an end when he signs the contract.”

Udinese owner Giampaolo Pozzo meanwhile maintains that a deal has not been finalised and that Barca must increase their offer.

“I admit that for us it is hard to hold on to important players like Alexis Sanchez. “Sanchez to Barcelona? At the moment, we are a long way away [from that],” Pozzo was quoted as saying by Sky Sport 24.

“We are waiting for the right offer, but until now it has not arrived. The value of Sanchez is €50 million.”

Diego Maradona: Real Madrid have always wanted Sergio Aguero, but he could stay with Atletico

19.06.2011 at 16:18

Al-Wasl coach feels son-in-law could remain with his current club, but said the Bernabeu outfit are always keen on getting their hands on him

Diego Maradona has said that Real Madrid want Atletico Madrid forward Sergio Aguero, but he has tipped him to remain with his current side.

The 23-year-old has made no secret about his desire to leave, giving rise to plenty of talk surrounding Real Madrid, and Italian club Juventus who are also said to be interested.

The Colchoneros have made clear how things stand – clubs have until July 4 to negotiate, or they can pay €45 million – his release clause.

But, Maradona, who is Aguero’s father-in-law believes a Rojiblancos stay is more likely, despite his claims that his side’s city rivals still want him.

“Sergio will continue in Madrid, at Atletico or wherever,” Maradona is quoted as saying by AS.com.

“They [Real Madrid] have always wanted him, and Spain should always be thankful to the Maradona family.”

Atleti coach Gregorio Manzano recently said he would prefer the striker to stay despite growing anger from fans who fear a Real Madrid move.

‘I want to leave Tottenham’ – Luka Modric paves the way for Chelsea switch

18.06.2011 at 11:14

Luka Modric has admitted he wishes to leave Tottenham, and has hinted at the possibility of joining Chelsea this summer.

The Croatian, who has been at White Hart Lane since 2008, was the subject of a £22million bid from the west London club on Wednesday, which was subsequently branded ‘ridiculous’ by manager Harry Redknapp.

The midfielder has also been coveted by Manchester United but insists he will not hand in a transfer request to Spurs as he wishes to depart on good terms.

“I want to leave Tottenham as friends. I have enjoyed my time there, but now it is right for me to look at another club,” Modric told the Daily Mail.

‘”I need to talk with the chairman. I won’t ask for a transfer, no. That would be disrespectful. I don’t want to have an argument with Tottenham.

“I have an arrangement with the chairman. When I signed my new contract, he said that, if another club came to sign me, they would consider the offer.

“If somebody comes to the club and the offer is good for me and acceptable to them, then I want to leave.”

Modric concedes a stay in London is preferable and hints a move to Chelsea would fulfill his trophy-winning ambitions.

“I want to stay in London. I am very happy here and so are my family. I like the city,” said Modric.

“Chelsea are a big club with an ambitious owner. They have great players and they have ambitions to fight for the title and win the Champions League.

“I hope they [Tottenham] can reach an agreement [with another club] that is satisfactory for everyone. I am on holiday, but I need to speak and to see if I can find a solution to this.

“It has to be good for my ambition. It has to be a club who are winning titles and playing in the Champions League.

“This is not about money, it is about ambition. When I came to England, I was dreaming about winning titles. That is still the same.”

Modric praised the support he has received from the club’s fans, but the 25-year-old admits he wants to challenge for silverware elsewhere.

“The supporters have been very good to me and I have enjoyed my time playing for the club, but it is for football that players leave clubs and move,” he said.

“It has happened to Tottenham before. It is normal for a player to dream about playing for a bigger club.

“Tottenham are a big club, with good players and a good manager, but I want to fight for the championship. Spurs will always have a place in my heart. My experiences in the Champions League have left me with the desire for more.”

Angel Di Maria asks Real Madrid for a new contract

18.06.2011 at 0:50

The Argentine winger is after an improved deal after a season, which he feels turned out better than he could have expected following his move to Spain from Benfica

Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria has requested a new contract from his club, despite the fact that his current deal runs until June 2016. The Argentine international, who is wanted by several European clubs, is settled in the Spanish capital but would like improved terms.

“I am very pleased and happy after my season. I am now eager for a contract renewal because I was promised that if things went well, I would receive a new deal,” he told Radio La Red.

“I am very happy in Madrid and eager to renew before the Copa America if possible.”

Di Maria, who joined last summer from Benfica, was surprised at how well his first campaign went, in part thanks to the contribution of the Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho: “I never expected to have such a good season in the league. I am very happy because I have grown a lot in Madrid. With the confidence of the coach, I made big improvements and he helped me to let go and enjoy more freedom.”

“I am really hoping the contract situation can be done as quickly as possible but I am calm and I am waiting to see what happens.”

Official: Jeremy Toulalan joins Malaga from Lyon

18.06.2011 at 0:48

Jeremy Toulalan has left Lyon for Malaga and signed a four-year deal with his new side, the Spanish club announced on Friday.

Although the transfer fee was undisclosed, reports suggest it’s somewhere between €10-15 million. The Liga outfit say 27-year-old Toulalan, who is a France international, has penned a deal to tie him to the club until 2015.

A statement on the Spanish side’s official website reads:

“Malaga Club de Futbol and Olympique Lyonnais close an agreement for the transfer of Toulalan.

“The Spanish club has reached an agreement with Olympique Lyonnais during this morning for the transfer of the international player Jeremy Toulalan.

“The midfielder, who has also reached an agreement with the Malaga team for the next four seasons, will sign his new contract in the coming days and will be presented in the last week of this month.”

The former Lyon man had been at the Stade Gerland since 2006, but a poor campaign last term appears to have influenced his decision to leave.
